Park Service Proposes C&O Canal Upgrades
HANCOCK, Md. (AP) -- The National Park Service says it wants to rewater another 2.5 miles of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in the western Maryland town of Hancock.
The rewatering is part of a proposal the agency released Monday for upgrading the C&O Canal National Historical Park in the Potomac River town. The park service is seeking public comment on the plan through Oct. 10. A public meeting is set for Sept. 24 in Hancock.
About a half-mile of the canal has been rewatered in Hancock to show visitors what it looked like in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The project also would add a pedestrian bridge, a walk-in campground and boat rides.
The project also includes restoration of an aqueduct over Tonoloway Creek.
