ACLU Supporting Md. Woman In Pregnancy Discrimination Supreme Court Case

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Maryland woman whose pregnancy discrimination case will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court is getting support from the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU announced Thursday that it joined with New York-based A Better Balance in filing a brief with the Supreme Court in support of Peggy Young. Young was a package delivery driver for UPS in Maryland when she was told she could not have a light duty assignment so she could continue working while pregnant.

Young says the company allows employees with some medical conditions to perform jobs in which they can avoid lifting heavy packages. She returned to work after giving birth.

Lower courts ruled that UPS did not violate the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in dealing with Young.

The case will be argued Dec. 3.
