Poll: D.C. Voters Strongly Favor Pot Legalization

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new poll shows that District of Columbia residents favor legalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.

The poll released Thursday by The Washington Post found that 65 percent of likely voters said they would vote for an initiative that would legalize possession of up to 2 ounces of pot.

The District has already decriminalized marijuana possession. The legalization initiative would put the nation's capital in the company of Colorado and Washington state, where marijuana is legal. However, there are questions about whether Congress would intervene to stop the initiative from taking effect.

The poll was conducted from Sept. 12-14 and has a margin of error of 4 percent among the 572 respondents identified as likely voters.
