Ravens Linebacker Daryl Smith Prefers To Fly Under The Radar

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—He's one of the best on the field. But when it comes to publicity, Daryl Smith isn't playing.

Jessica Kartalija talks with Smith, who says he prefers to fly under the radar.

Smith is making some of the strongest plays this season, but you may not know much about him.

He likes to maintain a low profile.

"I am not a person who wants to be in the spotlight. I want to come in, do my job on Sundays and be a good example for the younger guys," Smith said. "I like to work and that's what it's about for me."

Raised in Georgia, the 32-year-old is a genuine southerner: a hard-working, family man.

"I work, go home with the family, play with the kids, go to sleep and then back at it again. We love it up here and it's been great so far," Smith said.

He and his wife, Ramee, have three kids who have no idea what a superstar their dad is.

"They don't really get it. They know I play football, and they know about the Ravens. They don't get the concept that I play in the NFL," Smith said.

Off and on the field, Smith says his job is to lead by example.

"People can talk about what it is to be a good example, but you have to show it," he said. "We are here to win a championship, but it's a long journey though. We would certainly like to have more wins, but we've earned what we've got."

Smith, who signed a four-year deal with the Ravens, says he's proud to be a part of such an elite team.

"Knowing the guys who were here and the standard of ball that they played, then seeing and living the standard that was here, it was awesome," Smith said.

"Baltimore loves their teams and as an athlete I appreciate that," he said.

Smith played football for Georgia Tech, and prior to playing for the Ravens he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
