Vacant Warehouse Fire Leads To Multiple Fires In Northeast Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Things have calmed down for Baltimore City firefighters after responding to seven structure fires in the northeast section of the city---one after another.

Sunday afternoon was the beginning of what would be a long few hours for Baltimore City firefighters as they battle seven structure fires in northeast Baltimore.

The first---and the cause of it all---was a four-story vacant warehouse at Kirk and Curtain avenues. The building was engulfed in flames and smoke billowed out of any open area of the structure.

Firefighters say because of windy conditions and embers, more fires sparked within a few hours.

"The embers basically began to spark off seven additional fires we had to respond to," said Baltimore City Fire Captain Roman Clark.

The fire department's resources were taxed heavily because of so many fires at once, but there are plans in place to handle these situations.

"We did ask for the additional mutual ad to come in and assist us so that the entire city is covered at this time," Clark said.

Some of the fires extended into additional dwellings, but luckily, there have been no reported injuries.

"The source of the sparking of the fire has definitely been placed under control," Clark said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire crews have been on the scene of many of these locations to make sure those hot spots don't spark any more flames.
