School Closed After Vehicle Drives Into Cafeteria

SPARROWS POINT, Md. (WJZ) -- Path of destruction. A Baltimore County school is closed after a car comes crashing through the cafeteria.

Rochelle Ritchie has more on the damage.

Contractors at Sparrows Point High School are repairing the front window of the school cafeteria after an SUV crashed through it Tuesday night.

"The Ford Explorer hit the back of the Kia Sportage, went off the roadway, continued in a northerly direction and struck the front of the school," said Cpl. John Wachter, Baltimore County Police.

The impact of the crash was so severe, firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to pull the driver out.

"He was flown to Shock Trauma by state police medevac," said Wachter.

Baltimore County Police say the SUV swerved off a main avenue into the front lawn of the school. Tire tracks lead all the way up to the cafeteria windows.

Inside, you can see just how close lunch tables were to the crash site--a reminder to students just how lucky they are that school was not in session.

"Like somebody could have gotten really hurt if there were people in there," said Michael Hewitt, student.

The driver in the crash was alert as he was flown to the hospital. No word on what caused the accident.

School officials say they expect Sparrows Point to be back open on Thursday.

The other driver sustained minor injuries.
