Several Students Arrested After Fight At AACO High School

GAMBRILLS, Md. (WJZ) --Violence errupts on an Anne Arundel County high school campus. More than 30 officers respond.

The fight involving 10 girls ended with eight teens arrested. Police said it got out of control when other students jumped in the middle of the brawl.

Mayhem breaks out at Arundel High School.

"Everybody was running through the hallways and everybody was getting pushed down and then the whole school was everywhere," 9th grade student Courtney Wilburn said.

Wilburn is a freshman at Arundel High. She witnessed the violence inside.

"I was scared," Wilburn said. "I was shaking."

"Poor behavior on the part of just a handful of students," Lieutenant T.J. Smith with Anne Arundel County police said.

Anne Arundel County police Lt. Smith said the brawl involving ten girls broke out during a program held inside the cafeteria.

"With all of this chaos going on in the school, the school resource officer asked for additional cars," Lt. Smith said. "When the additional cars got there they saw how big the scene was and they asked for additional cars."

More students jumped in and added to the chaos. The school was on lockdown while officers controlled the situation.

Four girls ranging in ages from 14 to 15 and four boys ranging in ages 15 to 17 were arrested.

Police believe this was an isolated incident, but several officers remained on campus as a precautionary measure.

"Make sure tensions are eased and give parents a peace of mind," Lt. Smith said.

"The staff and administrators do all they can to keep them safe," Kim Mercado, relative of a student said.

Mercado's nephew called her to pick him up from school. She said it was a call she didn't expect.

"I was very surprised," Mercado said. "It doesn't happen at this school... it has never."

Police said it is still unclear what started the fight. The arrested students face juvenile charges ranging from second-degree assault to disorderly conduct.

Police said no weapons were used and no one was seriously injured.
