Md. Police Attend Funeral For NYPD Officer Gunned Down Last Week
BEL AIR, Md. (WJZ) -- Saying goodbye. Thousands of police officers around the country head to New York for the funeral services of an officer killed last week.
Marcus Washington has reaction from a group of Maryland police officers who left Saturday morning to attend the funeral.
A contingent of about 35 officers left early Saturday morning from Bel Air to make the trip to New York to pay their respects to Officer Rafael Ramos.
They arrived before the sun came up. Law enforcement officers from Harford County boarded a charter bus bound for New York City to attend the funeral for Officer Rafael Ramos--one of the two police officers gunned down one week ago.
"We want to show support for our fellow officers, not only in New York City, but across the country. This is something that is very important to law enforcement in general," said Chief Teresa Walter, Havre de Grace Police Department.
Police say Ismael Brinsley shot both officers in cold blood. It was a rampage that began in Owings Mills, where police say he shot and wounded his girlfriend.
Saturday, a sea of blue engulfed New York City.
"And without a doubt, you will find us all coming together under any circumstances. But more importantly, under these kind of trying circumstances," Walters said.
Circumstances local officers and others hope they will never see again.
"We do want to show our support and our respect for the officers of the New York City Police Department. And again, like I said, for law enforcement in general," said Walters.
Gunther Charters donated the bus that carried those law enforcement officers to New York.
The family of the other slain officer, Wenjian Liu, attended the Ramos funeral as a sign of solidarity. Funeral plans for Officer Liu have not been announced.
