5-Year-Old Injured In Baltimore Apartment Fire

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- An apartment fire happened early Monday morning in Baltimore City, leaving a child seriously injured. Tracey Leong explains what happened.

A 5-year-old boy was found inside the apartment. Firefighters say he wasn't breathing so the child was rushed to a local hospital.

Fire crews rushed to an apartment complex on the 1700 block of Madison Avenue in Baltimore City just before 8 a.m.

"Came upon heavy fire showing from the first floor," Baltimore City Fire Captain Roman Clark said. "Units made a quick knock down of the fire and gained entrance inside the apartment."

Inside the apartment, crews found an unresponsive young boy.

"When we removed him, he was not breathing," Cpt. Clark said. "We immediately began CPR and were able to get a pulse back and transported him to the hospital."

Crews quickly contained the blaze before it spread to other units.  Many people in the building, as well as nearby, scrambled outside to see all the commotion.

"I could see the flames, but flames that were under control," Shiraz Ahmed said.

Ahmed works nearby and saw the scene unfold.

"People in the other building and the street... everyone was very very concerned with what was going on, especially the family whose house it belonged to," Ahmed said.

No other injuries have been reported and the apartment complex remains open as crews work to repair it.

The boy remains in critical condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
