WEATHER BLOG: Tricky Sunday

Saturday was a nice, but chilly day in the area, with the high reaching 34 at BWI. Temperatures dropped a bit last evening, but have begun to rise early this morning into the 30s. This will be very important as precipitation streaks into the region through the early morning.

A cold front is slowly approaching from the west along with a long wave upper level trough. This will spawn an area of low pressure to form along near the DelMarVa and move northward over Long Island and New England through Sunday night. At the start this morning, ground temperatures were cold enough for some rain to freeze surfaces
as precipitation began between 6 AM and 8 AM despite air temperatures above freezing.

FREEZING RAIN ADVISORIES for Carroll, Baltimore (including City), Harford and Cecil counties remained in effect at separate times through noon.

This will especially be the case north and west of the city. Ice accumulations will be minor (a trace to at most 0.05 of an inch) but even a trace can lead to slippery travel. Now, by mid morning, everywhere in the region will be plain rain, and the heaviest will fall between 10 AM and 4 PM. Rainfall amounts look to range generally range from 0.25-0.50 of an inch. Temperatures will spike into the 40s as the storm
passes by. Rain will quickly taper this afternoon, and it will be breezy as the storm system pulls away. High pressure will briefly control our weather Monday and Tuesday ahead of our next weather maker for Tuesday night into Wednesday. A strong piece of energy will dive into the Ohio Valley, and depending on the track of this system, it
may deliver the region some snow or rain. This system will depart late Wednesday, and cold conditions will end the week.
