Southern Maryland Preparing For Overnight Ice

LA PLATA, Md. (AP) -- The season's first serious snowstorm is out of the way but southern Maryland roads crews are preparing for their next challenge: refreeze.

Icy road conditions after the overnight temperature drop are going to be the focus leading into Wednesday, county officials said.

Stephen Staples, chief of county roads for the Charles County Department of Public Works, said while salt and sunshine helped melt some snow on Tuesday, the county was bringing in more staff early Wednesday to deal with problem areas during the morning rush hour.

Tony Jones, spokesman for St. Mary's County, said the Department of Public Works and Transportation would also be addressing slippery areas along the county's major arteries and side streets.

Temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-teens overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
