Top Ranking State Corrections Official Fired Over Facebook Post

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) -- Comments made on social media cost a top ranking state corrections official his job.

Jessica Kartalija explains.

State Stat Coordinator and Police Liaison Michael Allred posted comments on Facebook about correctional officers, which the union sent to his boss.

He posted: "Visiting the prisons...haven't been groped this much since the flight on the honeymoon...and this is just the guards!"

Thursday afternoon, Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary Stephen Moyer terminated Allred, citing inappropriate comments made on social media.

AFSCME, which represents prison guards, quickly applauded Allred's firing.

"AFSCME members believe that Michael Allred's social media comments were inappropriate and insulting to 7,200 Maryland correctional officers," said AFSCME Communications Director Jeff Pittman. "We believe Secretary Moyer has taken the right course of action in terminating his employment with the department."

WJZ has not been able to reach Allred for comment.
