Winter Blast Brings Snow, Sleet & Freezing Rain

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Another blast of winter has left treacherous conditions across our entire area on Sunday bringing with it snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

Tracey Leong has more on the Sunday's winter storm.

The temperatures supported an all snow event on Sunday morning, but conditions quickly became messy with sleet and freezing rain by the afternoon.

The conditions continued to deteriorate by night fall, leaving drivers with extreme slick spots on the road.

Highway crews tackled the winter blast with around the clock treatment, salting all major roads and highways. Officials say crews dumped more than 900 tons of salt to battle the sleek and dangerous conditions.

"Ice is probably the worse thing that can fall on the roadways, because it creates extremely hazardous conditions and its not something we can plow," said William Johnson, Department of Transportation.

The winter storm caused havoc for people throughout Baltimore. Crews working around the clock to address problems popping up all over the city including water main breaks.

"I understand your frustration, and I am utilizing every available resource that we have to fix this problem," said Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

A water main break on Broadway was one of just 25 reported Sunday morning, a number officials are prepared to see rise.

Highway crews will continue to treat all major roads and highway through Monday, however the morning commute will likely be icy. Officials are urging all drivers to leave early and plan ahead when traveling on Monday. "Expected below freezing temperatures overnight could cause refreezing of any precipitation on roadways. If you must drive, reduce speeds, especially along ramps, bridges and overpasses where freezing can occur first," said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. "Crews will work overnight to keep roads passable, particularly for emergency vehicles."

If you run into a problem where you are stranded you can call 311 to be towed for free. So far this season the city has used 46 thousand tons of salt...costing about 2.7 million dollars.

Temperatures will slowly rise through the night touching a high of 33 by daybreak on Monday.

Clouds will break for sunshine on Monday as high pressure builds in from the west; Tuesday looks to turn out mostly dry, though another storm will impact the area in the evening and at night. Right now, it looks to be an ice to rain type scenario, perhaps ending as some snow Wednesday night. A more tranquil weather regime will follow thereafter.
