Software Developers Are In Great Demand In Greater Baltimore

Software developers typically have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Mathematics. Some have a master's degree; although employers favor those, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, software developers who have strong programming skills and are good problem solvers regardless of degree. Many employers, according to U.S. News, look for practical experience gained through certifications, internships and other types of on the job experience.

The job outlook for this profession, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is above average; employment is expected to grow 22 percent from 2012 to 2022, driven largely by the ongoing demand for computer software for mobile devices and companies' desire to remain competitive.

Two common types of software developers are:

Applications software developers who create the applications that are used by either consumers directly or by companies in their course of business. The other type of developer is the systems software developer whose focus is the actual operating system sold to the general public or perhaps to a specific company. A developer may also concentrate on the system interface which permits users to communicate with the computer.

Some specific tasks of a software developer which may be handled independently or, more commonly, collaboratively, within an assigned work group are:

  • Assess user's computer hardware or software needs, then design, test and install software accordingly (Some software developers write their own software code; others give it to others to complete)
  • Instruct programmers how to write the code including providing models and flowcharts diagramming exactly what is needed
  • Ensure the software program functions through testing and maintenance
  • Recommend system upgrades as necessary
  • Maintain the system as necessary to retain functionality
  • Collaborate with other developers to document system maintenance

Finally, pay for software developers overall is quite attractive; the median wage according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics for Applications software developers in the top four industries is $93,350. For systems developers, for their top four industries, the bureau lists their average as slightly higher, at $99,000.
