Crafters, Loyal Customers Gather On State Fairgrounds

TIMONIUM, Md. (WJZ0--Craftspeople from around the area have  spent the winter working in their shops, getting ready for the spring and summer time sales period.

Now as Mike Schuh reports, one of those first exhibitions is in Timonium.

Artist Nick Vincent has a great firm handshake. You would too if you did what he does.

Nick grew up in Pikesville, and lives in Pennsylvania now.

"This was used for spoons and ladles, which is sort of the shape I'm going to get," Vincent says.

But at each Sugarloaf Festival, you can find Nick in the corner hammering away.

Nick says working at the festival is enjoyable, "I love coming to the show because I work in a shop alone and love talking to people."

Fly a few blocks over and you'll meet  glass artist Thomas Von Koch.

He likes the contact with his customers as well.

"I realize you get very loyal customers here at these shows , they come at each show and they get very disappointed if you don't have anything new because they want to buy something and they have everything you are producing," said Von Koch.

Loyal customers help keep the booths full and potter Allen Weichman counts on customers to keep him entertained--especially kids.

"One kid kept looking under my wheel because he wanted to know where the clay was coming from as it was going up," Weichman laughs.

The Sugarloaf Craft Festival runs today through Sunday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds.
