Weekend Wine Fest. Kicks Off Sunday In Highlandtown

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—It's homemade wine, great food and a lot more and it happens on Sunday in one of Baltimore's oldest and most beloved neighborhoods.

Ron Matz says get ready to raise a glass in Highlandtown.

The white marble steps, our Lady of Pompeii, DiPasquale's Italian Market and now homemade wine-- the annual Highlandtown Wine Festival has come a long way in 12 years.

"We started behind the church with about 100 people the first year. Sunday we're expecting more than 1,000. Highlandtown is the place to be on Sunday," said Domenic Petrucci, Festival Cofounder.

Sunday's festival raises money for the church and the Community Association.

"In the past 12 years the festival has raised about $30,000 for our Lady of Pompeii and the Community Association. It helps us with some of our community events and outreach," said Kevin Bernhard, Highlandtown Community Association.

"We are proud to be part of the fabric of this neighborhood. It's exciting to see new faces coming in. People from Jersey and New York and they want this Italian thing and we provide that," said Joe DiPasquale, DiPasquale's Italian Market.

And for the 1,000 or so folks who come here, it's more than just the wine--its about living in or coming back  to a beloved part of Baltimore.

"I grew up in Italy, but I spent over 40 years in Highlandtown, so this community is my heart," Petrucci said.

The Highlandtown Wine Festival is 1:00 p.m. til 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. There's even a grape stomping contest this year.
