Baltimore-Made Food Highlighted At Lexington Market

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- If you've lived here for a while, you know that Baltimore has some unique foods made right here. Monday morning, local food producers and food buyers got together.

Ron Matz reports it was about the city and economic development.

From carrots to caramels, a food vendor fair at Lexington Market was designed to showcase "Made in Baltimore" foods like Mallow Crunchies.

"We have gourmet crispy treats. We make the marshmallows from scratch. We sell now in some stores but we're always looking to expand so an event like this is great and hopefully that's what will happen," said Nikki Lewis, Mallow Crunchies.

And here schools and other institutions are checking out these locally made products.

"I think that we're trying a lot of good things, setting up some partnerships and relationships, meeting farmers, finding food at its source so that we can bring it to our students and offer the best programs we can," said Bill Connor, Johns Hopkins University Director of Dining.

The mayor says it's all about economic development.

"When you go around and look at the different vendors, they have items you won't find anywhere else in the world. That's what I like about it---we're owning our space and really promoting what's great about Baltimore," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. "Why shouldn't our Baltimore brand be on every institution in this city? This is about making those connections and making those introductions."

The three hour vendor fair was attended by 50 local food buyers for major institutions including schools, hotels and hospitals.
