Cumberland Speedway Races Delay To 2016 Amid Renovations

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Cumberland Speedway organizers and county officials have agreed to delay the return of dirt-track racing at the Allegany County Fairgrounds until spring 2016.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the agreement was reached on Tuesday after delays in renovating the facility have proven too much to stage races in 2015.

The Cumberland Speedway group, which was formed in late 2014 to revive the track, has been coordinating the half-mile track's renovation, together with fairgrounds and county personnel.

Organizers say the Cumberland Speedway will be ready to hold a full schedule of events next year as part of the recently revived Cumberland Speedway Series. The track has held just one race since 2012.

Speedway manager Calvin Davis says the primary reason for the delay is that new safety rails have yet to be installed.
