Hiker Rescued After Fall On Sugarloaf Mountain

DICKERSON, Md. (AP) -- Frederick County officials say a 63-year-old woman was rescued after she fell down a steep rock face on Sugarloaf Mountain.

The Frederick News-Post reports that County Division of Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Lt. Keith Hubble says the woman was hiking Thursday when she fell about 25 feet. He says the woman struck several rocks that appear to have injured her face and head.

Because of the rocky and slippery terrain, Hubble says rescuers had to rappel down the rock face to reach her. He says she was eventually hoisted up to a helicopter and flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

Hubble says the woman seemed to have "varying degrees of consciousness" during the three-hour rescue, but details of her condition at the hospital were not available.
