DUNDALK, Md. (WJZ) --Two people are dead and two others are in critical condition as the result of a car accident in Dundalk.

The investigation into the cause is ongoing, WJZ's Tracey Leong reports.

Authorities have identified the two women killed in a fatal crash in Dundalk Thursday night.

22-year-old Brittany Nicole Walker, of Essex, and 20-year-old Gabrielle Pitts, of Middle River, were killed instantly when the Honda Prelude they were traveling in was struck from behind by another vehicle.

The driver of the Prelude, and another passenger, remain in critical condition at at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Around 9 p.m., Baltimore County police responded to the crash at North Point Boulevard.

An initial investigation revealed the 1997 Honda Prelude was stopped at the red light waiting to turn left onto Baltimore Street when it was struck in the rear by a a 2001 Ford Windstar. The driver of the Windstar was identified as 33-year-old Dundalk man.

The driver and his passenger suffered minor injuries and was released on the scene.

Officials say these accidents are becoming all too common.

"There are more cars on the road now than ever before. There's a higher population than ever before, so the chance of a crash occurring is higher than before, " said a spokesperson for Baltimore County police.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, traffic has increased across the country--the biggest jump is the South Atlantic Region--where Maryland is grouped.

"People are not focused while driving. They're distracted, they're texting, they're on their cell phones, they're also not always buckling up," said AAA.

While drivers are aware of the dangers, they say it's just too difficult to predict how others will behave.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the fatal crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
