Annapolis Clinic For Uninsured Children Closing

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A nonprofit Annapolis clinic that serves children without health insurance is scheduled to close by the end of the month.

The Capital of Annapolis reports that 73-year-old nurse practitioner Sandra Shanahan of Edgewater will be closing Shanahan Children's Clinic on Sept. 29 because she says she has gotten too old to run it.

The clinic opened in 2005 and has served children primarily from the local Hispanic population, offering physical examinations, sick care, simple lab tests, patient and parent education and referrals to specialty care.

Shanahan says the clinic has seen about 2,250 patients, about 94 percent of whom were Hispanic. She says she has tried in vain for five years to find someone to take over the clinic, which has been funded by donations and grants.
