Baltimore's Water Filtration Plant Holds 100th Anniv. Celebration

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Some of the clean, great-tasting water can be found right here in Baltimore at the Montebello I Water Filtration Plant.

The plant is marking their 100th anniversary by celebrating on Saturday September 19, with a fun day of activities just as they did when they opened.

WJZ's Mike Schuh has more.

Montebello I Water Filtration Plant has been around since 1881, but on September 13, 1915, city leaders dedicated the first filtration plant, where more than 5,000 citizens gathered during a purifying ceremony.

"If you get brown or yellow water everyday and then all of a sudden you have something that goes through all these sand filters and is purified, and comes out crystal clear, that's something to celebrate," said Kurt Kocher Department of Public Works.

James H. Preston was Baltimore's mayor at the time, and called the celebration "the most important event that had taken place at the time."

On Saturday, attendees can expect live music, antique mobiles, giveaways, a beer garden and a kids zone! The celebration kicks off at 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A Maryland Historical Marker will also be recognizing the significance of Montebello Saturday afternoon.

The Montebello Centennial is a rain or shine event. For additional information, contact DPW at 410-545-6541.
