Jacob Brewer, 34, was participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer Saturday afternoon when he entered a sharp curve on Old Frederick Road and lost control and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Friends of Jacob Brewer have started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the education of his family. So far, $187,000 has been pledged.

Some also gathered outside his Virginia home to show their support.

"I think for all of us," said one of Brewer's friends. "Jake was transcendent, he transcended all of these divides and walls."

This was the second year for this ride in the D.C. area, and each rider had to raise a minimum of $2500 in order to participate.

Brewer was riding for a friend who had cancer.

"He was doing what he loved. He was an outdoorsman, he was in great shape and loved cycling," said a friend of Brewer's. "But he was doing it in service to other people. That speaks volumes about who he was as a person."

The Director of the Kimmell Cancer Center, Bill Nelson, issued a statement saying that he was saddened by the news and is praying for the family and friends of the rider."
