Investigation Begins After Police-Involved Shooting On Washington Boulevard

BALTIMORE (AP/WJZ) -- Baltimore Police are investigating after one of its officers shot a suspect Monday night.

Department spokeswoman Detective Nicole Monroe says the shooting occurred about 7 p.m. Monday on Washington Boulevard near Harman Avenue in the southwestern part of the city.

According to police, a veteran police officer was headed to a community meeting when he stopped to speak to a person in the intersection. Witnesses say that during that encounter, the person refused to show his hands to the officer. The officer continued to order that he show his hands, and then fired a single shot to the person's leg.

Monroe says the injury does not appear to be life-threatening.

No weapon was found on that suspect.

The officer involved is Major Byron Conaway, the commander of the Southwest District.

He is a 16-year-veteran of the force.

He will be placed on routine administrative duties.
