Phelps Uses Social Media To Celebrate His Growth

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – It's been a year since Michael Phelps was arrested for DUI.

Jessica Kartalija reports for WJZ.

Phelps took to social media to comment about this infamous anniversary, and fans added messages of support—telling the swimmer to keep it up, and calling him an inspiration in many ways.

Police footage from September of 2014 shows Phelps in custody after being arrested.

It was his second DUI in 10 years, and he pleaded guilty, receiving a one-year suspended sentence and 18 months of supervised probation.

Phelps called it the "biggest learning experience that I have ever had," and said he learned a lot about himself.

Phelps posted a quote by the poet Rumi on his Instagram on Wednesday, and he wrote a comment beside it saying, "This day a year ago I found myself in a dark hole. At this point in my life today I can't be happier !!! My life today with my fiancée and my career is better than I could ever imagined. Going through the things I have gone through in the last year have changed my outlook on life."
