Reward Offered In 2-state Probe Of Marine's Hit-and-run Death

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police are announcing a $1,000 reward offer in their expanding investigation of the hit-and-run death of a young Marine who had stopped to help a disabled motorist in Frederick County.

Police said Thursday that state and local authorities in Maryland and Pennsylvania are involved in the search for a heavy-duty pickup truck or larger vehicle pulling a car trailer. They say the truck would have obvious damage on the passenger side.

The truck hit 21-year-old Cpl. William Ferrell during a rainstorm shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday on the northbound shoulder of U.S. 15 a few miles south of Thurmont. Police say Ferrell had donned a reflective vest and activated white strobe lights on his pickup to alert other drivers.

He was from Carthage, North Carolina.
