New Life Coming To Baltimore's Harborplace At The Inner Harbor

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--New life coming to downtown Baltimore. Often called the crown jewel of Charm City, Harborplace at the Inner Harbor is getting a facelift.

WJZ's Marcus Washington has the details

It's the home place of much of the city's fan fair.

Harborplace is now a far cry from when it was just land bordering water, changing the feel of the area, 35 years ago, when the then $18-million construction project opened to 200, 000 people all packing the pavilions wanting to see the new attraction.

While Harborplace still holds a special place in the city, owners of the property feel it's time for a makeover.

"What's happening along Pratt Street and at the Inner Harbor are a number of different projects put together by different groups, some are public, some are private," said Mike Evitts, Downtown Partnership Baltimore.

Mike Evitts with Downtown Partnership Baltimore says the New York base owners of the property are looking to make changes to the outer appearance, much like the early rendering of the plan.

And the renovations aren't just here at Harbor Place, they will stretch along the Inner Harbor, going to Rash Field.

There is also a focus on the appeal inside to attract the thousands of people who live and work in the downtown Baltimore.

"If you find the right businesses, that is still the A+ location in Baltimore City and if you give people a reason to go there, they're going to support it," Evitts said.

According to Downtown Partnership Baltimore, we could see the changes within the next five years.
