Police Searching For Clues After Driver Fatally Struck U.S. Marine, Left The Scene

THURMONT, Md. (WJZ)—State police are still searching for the driver who struck and killed a U.S. Marine last week as he was helping someone on the side of the road in Frederick County.

21-year-old U.S. Marine Corporal William Ferrell was on the northbound shoulder of Rt. 15, north of Auburn Road, in Thurmont, when he was fatally struck on the evening of September 29.

According to police, Ferrell had pulled onto the shoulder to help a disabled motorist. Investigators have determined that Ferrell put on a reflective vest and activated white emergency strobe lights on his truck to increase the level of safety.

For an unknown reason, the driver of what police believe is a heavy duty pickup truck that was pulling a car hauler trailer, struck and killed Ferrell and then left the scene.

Police say the truck should have obvious damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.

Authorities have offered a reward leading to additional information in the incident.

Anyone with information about the person or vehicle involved in this fatal hit and run crash is urged to contact Maryland State Police at the Frederick Barrack, at 301-600-4151
