Owl Attacking Runners In Maryland Park

BETHESDA, Md. (WJZ) — Concerns are growing at a popular running and biking trail in Maryland. Several people have been attacked by a feathered predator.

Amy Yensi reports for WJZ.

Perched on an undisclosed tree, a predator awaits. Montgomery parks are now warning about a barred owl that's been attacking people on the Capital Crescent Trail in Bethesda.

Spokesman Bill Hamilton says the bird is trying to stake its claim on a new habitat.

"We have had an occurrence of scratches amongst the head," he said. "In one case, the owl took someone's hat up into the tree and actually tried to treat it as food."

At least three runners report being attacked. The nocturnal bird hunts its prey at night.

Park staff put up signs, warning joggers and bikers to keep away during dark hours.

Other suggestions include making noise as the owl approaches and tucking in ponytails the bird may mistake for food.

"I'm definitely not going to walk on the train with a ponytail, that's for sure," said one jogger.

In each attack, the owl is silent in its flight and attacks from behind.

"They can be a problem for ducks or small herrings," said Stuart Armstrong, another jogger. "But on the other hand, they're great looking birds."

Some are finding unfriendly encounters with the owl funny. A parody Twitter account began tweeting after the trail signs went up.

One tweet said: "Tip No. 1 to not being attacked: Stay off the path."

"It's a hilarious sign," said Wayne Gallagher, a runner. "I don't think this owl is being aggressive, but I guess they are predators."

The barred owl is the most common species of owl in Maryland.
