Airport Security Heightens For International Travelers In Wake Of Terror Threat

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--The Department of Homeland Security is beefing up airport security following the suspected bombing of a Russian plane over Egypt. The new security focuses on certain overseas airports.

WJZ's Meghan McCorkell has the details.

Airports are on alert because of new fears over ISIS threats.

The TSA announced heighten security particularly for overseas flights headed to the United States and stricter baggage screening.

Ryan Stylinski tells WJZ she flys 10 months a year for her job as a health care consultant. She says depending where she's flying, sometime the security can be more thorough.

In airports both here and abroad you're going to see extra attention paid to bags, including extra scrutiny of the list of passenger names to make sure they match the name on all the checked baggage.

The crackdown comes after a Russian jetliner disaster over Egypt that killed all 224 people on board.

U.S. and British officials believe an ISIS sympathizer may have gotten access to baggage and planted a bomb in the cargo hold.

"It's a real game changer in terms of ISIS because this is an expansion of their activities," officials said.

Just this week, an undercover operation revealed that the TSA failed 95% of the time when detecting fake explosives at U.S. airports prompting new calls for action.

The U.S. is also offering more security resources to airports across the Middle East.

Security will focus on airport workers who are poorly paid and could be susceptible to terrorists bribes.

Today--Russia grounded all flights to Egypt until security is improved at the country's airports.
