Supermarkets Keeping Up With the Rush Of Last Minute Shoppers

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--It's one of the busiest shopping days of the year: Thanksgiving eve.

WJZ's Amy Yensi has more on how Maryland supermarkets are trying to keep up with the rush.

It's Thanksgiving eve and Maryland shoppers are crossing off their lists and stuffing their carts with the essentials.

The Wegmans in Columbia, calling in all 300 employees to help the 10,000 shoppers expected this week.

Some shoppers are shocked to find some items, completely sold out.

"We've got to hunt down a ham a day before Thanksgiving," said Ivy Johnson.

Thanksgiving dinner comes at price. You start with the turkey, then add in the sides and dessert--the cost can really add up.

In 2015, a Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people costs $50.11. That's up 70-cents from 2014 according to the American Farm Bureau.

"I think it's worth it because it's a holiday," said Joel Roth.

Yensi: "How do you decide which turkey to take home with you?

"The young ones because the fresh ones are much better than the frozen ones," said Arqile Belo. "But it's about more than the turkey: giving thanks for all we have and all we have been given."

If you still don't have a turkey you may be in luck.

Wegmans ordered 6,400 fresh turkeys and there are some left, but the store closes early on Thanksgiving.
