Country's Oldest World War II Vet Comes To DC

WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- A group of veterans in Austin, Texas, realized they needed to do something for their own.

As Mike Schuh reports, it required the country's oldest World War II veteran to hop on a plane to DC.

It was a hero's welcome water cannon salute for 110-year-old Frank Levingston. He is the nation's oldest World War II vet. An Army private during the war, he served in Italy. An honorable discharge led to a career as a cement finisher.

He lives in Louisiana and has never visited our capital. He says this is a dream come true.

"I'm just overwhelmed," said Livingston. "I appreciate it."

And here, there is appreciation for what he did for our country.

"There's a luncheon but I said this [meeting him] is more important because I, too, served and this is an honor," said Daisy Morgan.

"We've been invited to the White House and we're excited about that," said Shannon McCowan-Levingston, his niece.

The veteran's group Honor Flight Austin made this trip possible.

Levingston will be in town until Tuesday. He was the guest of honor at a Pearl Harbor ceremony held Monday in DC.
