2 Dead Following Police Chase On I-95

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--A police pursuit during rush hour ends in a deadly crash on I- 95 leaving traffic at a standstill for hours.

WJZ's Rick Ritter has the latest on the investigation.

Cell phone video obtained by WJZ shows the end of a police pursuit that took a wild turn in the White Marsh area on Friday afternoon.

An MDTA officer attempts to make a traffic stop in the area of Eastern Avenue and Joppa Road, but the car never stops.

"The pursuit stretched from Eastern Avenue all the way up to New Forge Road area of I-95," said Sgt. Jonathan Green, MDTA.

Police say the pursuit ended when the suspect's vehicle crossed over the median of I-95 northbound, went over to the southbound side and struck another vehicle head on.

The aftermath is devastating. Authorities say three people were in each vehicle.

One occupant in the suspect's was pronounced dead on scene. Another person from the victim's car was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Traffic on I-95 southbound was backed up for 8 miles at one point, Joyce Hitch was one of those drivers inching around the I-95 area.

"Everywhere I went today was backed up with traffic and every time something happens on 95, it's that way," she says.

Police say the other passengers involved in the wreck were transported to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

At this time, they're not saying why the officer initially pulled the suspect over.

Police don't have an update on the condition of the other passengers. They say the officer who initiated the pursuit has been in the department for five years.

MDTA says officers are allowed to pursue vehicles and that it's their discretion.
