Baltimore's Farmers' Market Takes Winter Break

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--A long-standing tradition in Baltimore comes to an end -- for now.

As Gigi Barnett explains, the Baltimore Farmers' Market draws thousands of customers during its eight-month season.

Residents get to buy directly from the farmer at Baltimore's Farmers' Market and Bazaar.

Three seasons of the year, under the JFX, customers can find the freshest produce, hand-crafted jewelry and unique gift ideas.

"Great selection...Always a good quality. I can often find vegetables that I cannot find in the supermarket here," said  Denita Massenburg, a farmers' market customer.

But as the holidays roll around the market shuts down for the winter and this weekend marks the last day.

"A lot of people would like to see this market go year round. I keep getting that comment from my customers," said Rudy Medicus, who runs Cat's Paw Organic Farm in Carroll County.

In a city with several food deserts, the market offers a way to bring in fresh fruits and vegetables.

"I do special potted plants for the Baltimore farmers' market because so many people don't have a garden. So, they can grow these on the window sill. I call it my salad on a sill line," said Medicus.

This is the market's 38th year and the city says it currently draws nearly 200,000 visitors during its season.

"It really has become more of a festival in the sense that it's part of a destination for families and friends to come out," said Megan Bosse, spokeswoman for the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts.

The 39th season of the farmers' market returns on April 17th under the JFX.
