Lack Of Cold Puts Damper On Business At Roundtop Mountain Resort

LEWISBERRY, Pa. (WJZ)--Let it snow. That's what ski fans in our area are saying. The unusually warm weather is slowing down the season.

As WJZ's Amy Yensi reports from Pennsylvania, one ski resort has not been able to open at all.

T'was the day before Christmas and not a skier in sight.

At the Roundtop Mountain Resort, there's more green than white.

No one riding the ski-lift or gliding down the slope, this Pennsylvania mountain is closed.

"In a more normal year we'd be covered with snow from side to side and there would be a bunch of people sliding down it," said Chris Dudding.

The weather's rainy and unseasonably mild. Snowflakes can't survive until the cold arrives.

On a good night machines can make up to a foot of snow. That can only happen with temps below 30 degrees. In our current conditions, it would basically make rain.

Chris Dudding says this December feels like September.

The patches of flurries are melting fast the rain is making puddles in the grass

"A lot of the snow we made last weekend we've lost. We're hoping that some of these piles will stick around, so we can start making on top of them," Dudding says.

Officials at Roundtop Mountain say they are hoping for a White New Year!

The forecast shows the coldest air of the season will arrive next week and snow making will resume at the resort as soon as it gets here.
