Bel Air Man Flies Through Bus Windshield Near Lincoln Tunnel

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A bizarre bus accident ends with a Maryland man in the hospital and passengers stunned.

Gigi Barnett reports for WJZ.

It was a usual traffic maneuver for the driver of a Baltimore-based tour bus.

Just outside of  New York's Lincoln Tunnel, the bus driver stopped at a red light and 68-year-old passenger Edward Meerholz, of Bel Air, Maryland,  went flying through windshield.

Officials say Meerholz was walking down the aisle while the bus was moving.

"He lost his balance and fell," one passenger said. "He couldn't regain his balance and fell through the window -- the windshield."

The glass stayed largely in one piece -- it's a special safety windshield designed not to shatter.

But what may be broken is the charter bus driver's confidence. He didn't want to give his name, but passengers say it wasn't his fault.

Medics rushed Meerholz to a hospital in New Jersey. He has injuries to his head and shoulder.

Authorities say nearly 60 people were on board the bus at the time of the incident. No one else was injured.
