Under Armour Unveils New Fitness Tracking Products

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — One of Baltimore's biggest companies is expanding its brand. Under Armour is getting into the fitness tracking industry, hoping to cash in.

Meghan McCorkell has more on their newest endeavor.

Those new products measure everything from your fitness to how you're feeling on any given day.

It's called the UA HealthBox, and Under Armour is banking on it being a big seller.

A fitness tracker, smart scale and heart rate monitor all interconnected, tracking your sleep, calories, nutrition and workouts.

The new system was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, CEO Kevin Plank says it's the first of its kind.

"It's what we see with HealthBox. It's giving consumers and arming them with information to help them win with their own personal health and fitness," Plank said.

The company has spent millions buying up personal fitness apps, including MapMyRun, Endomondo and MyFitnessPal, since 2013.

Under Armour already has 160 million registered users of those apps.

"I think it's a big impact on people," said Angie Smith, personal trainer.

Smith says wearable trackers are making a big splash on the fitness scene.

"Fitness trackers, they wear them when they're running, they wear them when they're working out, lifting weights," she said.

But will consumers shell out $400 for the HealthBox?

"Everyone's very into fitness now, so I think there's a huge market for it," said Claire McNabb.

Others are waiting on the reviews.

"If you're going to spend that type of money on something like that, you want to know that it's actually accurate," said Nicholette Lunner.

While you can sneak a peek in the window of the Under Armour Brand Store, the HealthBox doesn't go on sale until January 22.

Both Michael Phelps and Cal Ripken Jr. are in Vegas helping Under Armour with the launch.
