Baltimore Police: Woman Raped, Shot In Head

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Raped and left to die. A young woman is recovering after being assaulted Saturday night.

Tracey Leong explains the effort to catch the suspect.

Police believe this isn't the suspect's first sexual attack and they're turning to the public to help capture him.

A young woman was dragged into an alley and raped behind a vacant home, then shot in the head and left to die.

"That's shocking to be on my block, really," said Malayah Garcia.

The vicious assault took place in the 15-hundred block of North Carey Street in west Baltimore.

"This is a despicable act and there is a despicable human being that's walking the streets right now," said Baltimore City Police Lt. TJ Smith.

Police and community activists canvassed the neighborhood, passing out fliers and warning everyone to be on the lookout.

"A black make wearing a ski mask, a light brown complexion and armed with a handgun," Smith said.

Police believe the suspect is targeting young women who travel alone and are working to catch him before another attack.

"It's horrible. I think it's just ridiculous a human being would want to hurt another human being and leave them for dead," said Inez Robb.

A chilling crime leaving everyone on edge.

"He has no respect for women around here. We are supposed to look out for our sisters and brothers," said Tyrone Hill.

In an effort to bring him down, investigators say the suspect may be responsible for another sexual assault in the same neighborhood.

"It makes me scared for my whole family to know there is somebody out here doing stuff like that," Garcia said.

The 20-year-old victim is recovering at Shock Trauma; she is expected to survive.

Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7-LOCKUP.
