Passenger Cruise Ship Returns To Baltimore After Snow Delays

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Unlike the past couple of days, people were out and moving around on Monday.

Alex DeMetrick with the blizzard's impacts on transportation.

Some aspects of travel have greatly improved, but it hasn't been easy and it's still far from normal.

What happens when your cruise ship sailing up from Florida waters heads into a blizzard at sea? Hundreds of passengers returning to Baltimore found out.

"It was horrible. The waves came up in our porthole. It rocked and rolled like a roller coaster the entire time. And when they said we couldn't come back in and would have to spend another day out there, many people were crying," said Toni Jacobs, cruise passenger.

"We made it into the channel yesterday afternoon. So it was much smoother once we got past Virginia beach," said Pam McCarthy, cruise passenger.

On land, travel got a lot smoother on the interstates and major routes, but lanes still disappear in places, as crews work to move snow off highway shoulders.

Amtrak does have some trains running, but there are still cancellations.

But with public transit--no MARC service, no light rail, no commuter buses, no mobility transit--and there are major delays for bus and subway service.

At BWI Marshall, people have returned because the planes are back.

"We actually had no aircraft here at all over the weekend. The airlines canceled proactively all of their service starting Friday afternoon," said Jonathan Dean, BWI spokesperson.

But it was just what crews neded to clear runways of heavy snow, and flights were back in the air, as travelers readjusted their plans.

"I was supposed to leave yesterday and all the flights were canceled," said Kenya Floyd, air traveler.

Meanwhile, back at the cruise terminal, not everyone was upset the journey home took an extra day.

"Hanging out with friends. It was great. We had a good time, actually. An extra day away from the husband and kids," said Marcy Knizie, cruise passenger.

A silver lining, even amid seasickness.

Meanwhile, BWI Marshall and Amtrak say check ahead, as there are still some cancellations.
