A Final Salute: Hundreds Gather To Honor Fallen Harford Co. Deputy

JOPPA, Md. (WJZ) -- Gone, but never forgotten. Hundreds of people from across the state and around the nation gather to remember Senior Deputy Patrick Dailey.

Dailey was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call at an Abingdon Panera Bread.

Rick Ritter recaps an emotional day.

Law enforcement from Maryland and other states came out to pay their respects, remembering a deputy who served Harford County for 30 years and was just months away from retirement.

A patriot, a loving father and a true hero.

"Heartbroken by a senseless tragedy," Governor Larry Hogan said.

Dailey was shot and killed last week when responding to a call at a Panera Bread. Moments later, that same suspect – 68-year-old David Evans -- killed Deputy Mark Logsdon just blocks away.

"They died as rare, precious people, doing what they loved to do," said Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler, Harford County.

His fellow officers, family and the entire state remember a man who gave everything to his community and his children.

"He was always there for me and for my brother," said Brian, son of Deputy Dailey.

Children who took one final ride with their father on the Joppa-Magnolia fire truck.

"I'm going to miss him. I'm going to miss going hiking with him, going up to Gettysburg all the time," said Tyler, son of Deputy Dailey.

A packed motorcade then made its way through downtown Bel Air--hundreds with hands on their hearts.

"It brought tears to my eyes," said Jackie Ludwig.

Most—strangers showing support and eternal gratitude for his selfless service.

"I grieve the loss of Patrick Dailey," said Teri Scherer. "Without them, we wouldn't have this great county that we have."

A 21-gun salute is Deputy Dailey's last call, but his legacy lives on.

A rally is planned for both officers on Sunday at noon at Ripken Stadium.

Visitation for Deputy Mark Logsdon begins Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Mountain Christian New Life Center.

His funeral is Saturday at 10 a.m. on the campus of Harford Community College, located in the 1300 block of Cokesbury Road in Abingdon.
