Family Of Man Killed At Baltimore Landfill Speaks Out

BALTIMORE (WJZ)— One Dundalk family is trying to come to grips with a tragic loss after one of their own is killed by a truck at a south Baltimore landfill.

Rick Ritter has more on the investigation.

In an exclusive interview with WJZ, Sandra and Alicia Tyler remember 61-year-old James Tyler, a loving husband, father and grandfather, killed in the middle of his work day.

"I've been shaking, I don't know, I just can't fathom or get it into my head," said Sandra.

Tragedy struck around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when Tyler was hauling ash to Hawkins Point.

Sources tell WJZ Tyler's truck got stuck at the Quarantine Road landfill. When he got out to try and fix it, another truck was backing up and hit him. The 61-year-old was pronounced dead on scene.

Tyler was a Dundalk native, well known and looked up to by many.

"[He was] a good hearted person and a very good family man," said Sandra

His death was classified as accidental which isn't sitting well with his family.

"It was by mistake, but still it still happened, causing someone to lose their life," said Alicia Tyler.

Safety officials with the state and police are both actively investigating while Tyler's wife and daughter anxiously await answers.

"You're here one day and gone the next, over an accident that could've been prevented," said Alicia.

Tyler worked for a private trucking company.

His family tells WJZ they have retained a lawyer.

The landfill is a dump site for the public.

Department of Public Works says the trucks involved were not with their company.
