Prince George's County Officer Shot, Killed In 'Unprovoked Attack' On Police

LANDOVER, Md. (WJZ) -- A Prince George's County police officer is shot and killed in what's being called an unprovoked attack at a police station.

Officer Jacai Colson was rushed to Prince George's Hospital Center after being ambushed and shot.

We've seen dozens of officers since the afternoon--at first praying that he would recover, and then mourning and grieving together when they realized they lost their brother in blue.

A surprise attack on a Prince George's County police station leaves a four-year veteran of the force dead.

Authorities say 28-year-old Officer Jacai Colson was shot in a surprise attack--the suspect opening fire at the first officer he saw outside the District III Station.

"It wasn't about anything. This man launched an attack on a police station and engaged several Prince George's County police officers in a gunfight, to which they responded heroically," said Chief Henry Stawinski, Prince George's County Police Department.

We're told the startled officers exchanged gunfire and shot the suspect after realizing they were under attack Sunday afternoon.

"This is truly a dark day in Prince George's County. An unwarranted, unprovoked attack on our police officers at a police station. Absolutely unprecedented and unacceptable," said John Teletchea, president, FOP Lodge 89.

For several hours, all roads leading to the Landover building were shut down and residents were urged to stay inside their homes as officers canvassed the area, fearing other shooters were at large.

"Today we witnesses again another horrific act of evil--and this is an act of cowardice--a new low," said Angela Alsobrook, Prince George's County State's Attorney.

Officer Colson, of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, worked in the Undercover Narcotics Unit. He was rushed to Prince George's Hospital Center in a cruiser, and then later declared dead.

The suspected shooter is in stable condition and is expected to recover. A second shooter, who fled the scene, was later captured and is being questioned by police.

Officials are not identifying them, but a woman claiming to be the aunt of the suspects says they are 23 and 24-year-old brothers.

Local, state and even FBI agents who came to pray for Colson were inconsolable after learning that despite their prayers, he did not make it.

"He lit up a room. We was a tremendous personality that made everybody smile and wanted to be everything to everybody," said Teletchea.

Officer Colson would have celebrated his 29th birthday this week.

The suspects have not been formally charged, but the state's attorney called this an act of murder.

Authorities have not said what weapons were used in the attack. A briefing is expected Monday morning.

Governor Larry Hogan issued the following statement:

"I am shocked and saddened by the news this evening of the death of Prince George's County police officer Jacai Colson in the line of duty. Our administration is committed to assisting Prince George's County officials during this time, and the Maryland State Police are working closely with local law enforcement to provide support as needed.

"The First Lady and I send our sincere prayers to the family and loved ones of Officer Colson, who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his fellow citizens and community. It is my hope that his proud legacy of commitment and passion for law enforcement and serving others will provide some comfort in the difficult days that lie ahead."

Gov. Hogan has ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Officer Colson.
