2 Teens Killed After Police Try To Stop Driver Of Stolen Car

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A tragic end for two teenagers going for a joyride in a stolen car. When police try to pull the vehicle over, it crashes. A 16 and 13-year-old were killed. Two other teens survived.

Ava-joye Burnett speaks with family and gets details on whether charges will be filed in the case.

There were four kids in the vehicle--two 13 year olds and two 16 year olds--but only two of them made it out alive. Now their families are in mourning.

"That's my only son. There's no words to say what I felt. It's no words," said Cornell Gilbert Sr., father.

A tough reality for Cornell Gilbert Sr. -- that his son, Cornell Gilvert Jr., is dead.

Blurry photos show the aftermath. The 16-year-old was a passenger in a stolen BMW.

When police tried to pull the driver over on Wednesday night, the car with four kids in it hopped a curb near Mondawmin Mall and then crashed.

"Two families are grieving and we're working to collect all of the evidence as we continue to work through this investigation," said T.J. Smith, Baltimore City Police Department.

When the vehicle slammed into a pole along Reisterstown and Liberty Heights, folks who live in the area say the impact was so loud, it woke them up.

"It was terrible. The car was split in half," said Kareem Hines.

Gilbert -- a Northwestern High student -- and 13-year-old passenger Syiid Brinkley both died.

The 16-year-old driver and another 13-year-old passenger survived, but their lives could forever be changed if they face criminal charges.

"In fatal crash investigations, we don't just jump and charge because that can create a double jeopardy-type issue, so that's something we'll consult with the State's Attorney's Office," said Smith.

Two teens dead, two others survive to face a tough reality.

"I know that's something he's got to live with for the rest of his life. That's almost like jail time or him just being dead himself," said Latrice Gilbert, sister.

Police were asked if the stolen vehicle was being chased by an officer. That's still being investigated right now.

Police did not identify the 16-year-old driver who survived the wreck.
