Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Accident In Crofton

CROFTON, Md. (WJZ) -- Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that took place Friday in Anne Arundel County.

Officers responded to the report of a pedestrian struck early Friday on Crain Highway (MD-3) near Crossgate Drive in Crofton. Witnesses reported that the Toyota Avalon was northbound on MD-3 when it struck the pedestrian standing in the roadway just north of Crossgate Drive.

The pedestrian, identified as 21-year-old Niccolo Teobaldo Canning, was declared dead at the scene by fire department personnel and was taken to the medical examiner's office in Baltimore for autopsy.

The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be the pedestrian not yielding to vehicular traffic while in the roadway outside of a crosswalk. Neither speed nor alcohol appears to be involved on the part of the driver, 50-year-old David Brown from Bowie.  However, alcohol does appear to have been a contributing factor for the pedestrian.

Traffic Safety is handling the investigation. Any charges are pending review by the state's attorney.
