Senator Ted Cruz Campaigns In Towson Monday

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) -- On the eve of New York's primary, Senator Ted Cruz made a stop in Maryland. He's the second Republican presidential candidate campaigning in our state within five days.

Marcus Washington has more on why Maryland's primary is a hot ticket for candidates.

First it was John Kasich; Monday it was Ted Cruz. A lot of delegates are up for grabs in Maryland and one political expert says we haven't seen something like this in more than 30 years.

In front of a crowd of cheering supporters, Senator Ted Cruz was welcomed to Maryland.

"I'm standing behind Cruz because I think he's the only one who's actually going to stick to the Constitution, and for me, that's really important," said one woman.

At the Towson American Legion, Cruz wasted no time reminding supporters that Maryland's primary is days away and a big turnout is important.

"Maryland is a battleground. Maryland is going to have an outside voice as the nation is looking to Maryland to decide," Cruz said.

The reason Maryland has become such a battleground state is mainly because it's not a state where the winner takes all delegates.

"Particularly in the Republican party, things are still not quite settled and especially for the Republican candidates, Maryland represents a real opportunity," said Matthew Crenson.

John Kasich, who ranks third in most polls, stopped by last week, hoping to get more support and delegates.

It was revealed Monday afternoon that Donald Trump will speak at Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin.

Supporters know their votes are vital.

"As a voter, I think it means that my vote has more impact," said one man.

Typically this time of year, there's already a concrete winner---that's not the case right now and Maryland voters say they're happy to do their part.

Donald Trump's rally on the Eastern Shore will be Wednesday.

Maryland's primary is April 26.
