Missing Va. Firefighter's Car Found; She's Still Missing

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (WJZ) -- The search has expanded for a Virginia firefighter who disappeared last week. Nicole Mittendorff hasn't been heard from since last Wednesday.

On Tuesday, her family made an emotional plea for help.

Meghan McCorkell has more on the search.

Breaking down in tears, the husband of a missing Virginia firefighter sends a message to his wife: "Sweetheart, I love you, and I'm praying for you," said Steve Mittendorff.

Family members last heard from 31-yaer-old Nicole Mittendorff through a text message last Wednesday, April 13.

She was reported missing when she failed to show up for a shift at Fairfax County Fire and Rescue on Friday.

Search teams found her car in the Shenandoah National Park last weekend--but no sign of Mittendorff.

"She had some friends, or, has friends in the Warrentown area, so it wasn't a big surprise she was out there," said Pat Bramell, neighbor.

Family members say she is an avid runner and triathlete, who may have been training on a trail nearby.

She's been a firefighter for three years.

"Very motivated, very dedicated firefighter and paramedic," said Chief Richard Bowers, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

For days, federal, state and volunteer search crews have combed the park, shutting down other trails as they search for Mittendorff.

A website and Facebook page have been set up, asking for tips in the case.

Meantime, family members are pleading for answers, as they pray Nicole is found soon.

"I and the rest of Nicole's extended family continue to remain positive during this difficult time," her husband said.

The Fairfax County Fire Department will hold a candlelight vigil for Mittendorff on Wednesday.

At this point, officials say there's no evidence of foul play in Mittendorff's disappearance.
