Presidential Hopeful Donald Trump Holds Rally On Eastern Shore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — GOP front-runner Donald Trump brings his campaign to Maryland. The visit comes after securing a crucial win in the New York primary. Massive crowds flocked to Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin on Maryland's Eastern Shore to support Trump.

Rick Ritter has more on the event that drew thousands.

Some waited in line for hours just to be a part of the rally. Trump says he wanted to visit the small town, calling the crowd vibrant and exciting.

Fresh off a big win in New York's primary, Donald Trump celebrated all the way to the Eastern Shore, where he was met with a packed house at Stephen Decatur High School.

"Boy, this place looks vibrant!" Trump said at the start of his speech.

It's the same school a member of Trump's campaign once graduated from.

"I don't know what they produce at this school, but this guy is a champ," Trump said.

The rally drew thousands on Wednesday.

"You see the sound bites on TV, but to be able to see or hear somebody speak for an hour and a half, that's pretty cool," said Ruben Ortega.

There were massive crowds in Berlin, that put the small town in the spotlight.

"Nobody pays attention to the little towns. He cares. He showed he cares," said Greta Butts. "It's energetic. It's built to do this, to get excited about it."

Maryland's presidential primary is just days away.

"It's energetic. It's built to do this, to get you excited about it," said Ortega.

Outside, Trump protesters were in full effect. That was echoed by the union that represents most teachers in Maryland, which first called for the school system to block the rally, citing "Trump's eagerness to bully minorities."

It was a night to remember for a town that hasn't hosted a presidential candidate in years.

"I know we have people from all different political perspectives here, but at least it's everyone getting involved in the political process," said Jason Pylypczuk, a teacher at Stephen Decatur High.

There are reports that at least one person was arrested outside Wednesday night's rally.

Congressman Andy Harris, who's district is the Eastern Shore, released a statement, saying the Maryland teachers union should be ashamed they were against the rally and that he believes they should apologize to Mr. Trump.

The Maryland teachers union added that there's no place for Trump's behavior inside their public schools.

A spokesperson for the school system said Trump's campaign paid a $5,000 fee to use the gym.
