Firefighter Injured In Triple Shooting Released From Shock Trauma

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- He was one of two firefighters shot while conducting a welfare check in Prince George's County last week. The survivor of the two, 19-year-old Kevin Swain, has been released from the hospital.

Marcus Washington has more.

After eight days, Kevin Swain has been released from Shock Trauma.

"It's got to be the brightest point at the end of a very trying week for us as a fire department," said Prince George's County Batallion Chief Eric Reith.

The 19-year-old volunteer firefighter was one of two firefighters shot while conducting a welfare check at a home in Temple Hills. The brother of the man inside the home was concerned after not hearing from his diabetic brother. He called first responders to conduct a welfare check.

Both Swain and 37-year-old John Ulmschneider responded to the call. Swain kicked in the door and Ulmschneider was the first to go inside. The man inside was started by the entrance and shot and killed Ulmschneider. Swain was shot four times.

"There is a lot of trying times for him as he completes his recovery, both physically and emotionally. This is not the kind of event, as a fire service, that we are used to going to," Reith said.

After eight days of what has been described as a dark and trying week, it gets a little easier seeing Swain back in a fire engine, saying, "I'm ready to go home."

"Today, there is a little bit of a ray of light getting to see someone who was injured critically get to go home and complete their recovery and spend time with their family," Reith said.

Everyone who was injured during the April 15 incident has been released from the hospital. Ulmschneider's funeral was held Tuesday.
