Sanders Brings His Campaign To Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Maryland is feeling the Bern ahead of Tuesday's primary. Saturday, Bernie Sanders made a stop in Baltimore with a clear message to voters.

George Solis has the details after a one-on-one with the presidential hopeful.

Sanders spent the day campaigning in Maryland. Despite polls showing Hillary Clinton leading on Tuesday, Sanders made one thing clear: he wants to see the highest voter turnout in Maryland history.

Sanders supporters lined up by the hundreds outside Royal Farms Arena; all of them were quick to say they were feeling the Bern.

"We're excited about his campaign and we hope he'll keep going all the way, all the way as long as it takes to become president," said Joe Kekich.

WJZ caught up with the senator ahead of his rally. He started off with remarks about his last visit to Baltimore.

"It's important to show the world that in the United States of America, in Freddie Gray's neighborhood and in similar neighborhoods all over this country, what we're seeing is a disaster," he said.

Sanders made it clear he wants to curb high crime rates and improve education in the city.

"We need to invest in those communities, put people to work in those communities," he said.

Sanders' visit marks a revolving door of presidential hopefuls on both sides, campaigning heavily in Maryland ahead of Tuesday's primary. This past week, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz were in the state, as was former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton.

Stops political experts say are necessary with the delegate count at stake.

"The count is really what everyone is watching at this point," said one.

Sanders didn't come alone: actor Danny Glover was along for the ride.

"Here in Maryland, we have a chance to do something historic," Glover said.

Among his usual talking points, Sanders touched on a few key issues to Baltimore: unemployment and poverty.

"How do we have tax breaks for billionaires but not feed hungry children in Baltimore?" Sanders said.

Republican front-runner Donald Trump will be in Hagerstown Sunday, his second visit to the state. Trump is scheduled to speak at the Rider Jet Center Sunday at 4. Despite being favored to win, his opponents could still win enough delegates Tuesday to force a contested convention.
