TSA Promising Shorter Wait At Airport Security Checkpoints

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The TSA is promising a shorter wait the next time you're at an airport security checkpoint, as the head of security operations is out of the job.

Marcus Washington explains how this could affect travel in Maryland.

After hearing complaints from angry travelers and Congress, Kelly Hogan, responsible for TSA's security operations, is out.

His compensation of $181,500 and bonuses equaling $93,270 within 13 months have been questioned after screeners he supervised at 450 airports nationwide failed to detect mock explosives or banned weapons in 95 percent of the tests by the inspector general.

"Since his promotion to that position in 2013, security operations at TSA have been abysmal," said Rep. Jason Chaffetz, (R) Utah.

At BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, some say long lines have been the cause of hiccups in their travels.

"I actually have missed a flight because of TSA and it was very unfortunate, but at least they put me on another flight. So it was taken care of, said Jeeda Barrington.

The reason for the long lines around the country and at BWI had been blamed on staffing shortages, tightened screening measures and an increased number of flyers.

"I've flown out of Dallas before, and it takes ages," said Nick Bodoi.

With a change at the top, many are hoping it will create a faster, safer experience at TSA security checkpoints.

"Takes a while to hire and train and get people up to speed -- especially if they need clearance -- so I would not anticipate that they change any time soon," said Barbara Ware.

Hogan was named the assistant administrator for the Office of Security Operations in May 2013. He was responsible for 50,000 employees.
